As I mentioned in my post about the journey into my steam obsession, I help out at a sawmill during the fair. The particular sawmill happens to be a 00 Frick. It is fairly representative of a large range of portable belt feed sawmills. This book is the closest thing to a manual I have come across.
This book was intended originally to help mill owners be able to know what part to order or make in case of a breakdown. In a lot of ways this is similar to the exploded view you will see for some modern items in their manuals. Where this differs is in the detail.
Along with the list of parts for the various components of the mill are detailed engineering drawings. There are multiple views and even cutaways where needed to show details. While not always containing dimensions I don’t think it would be difficult to replicate parts from the drawings.
This book has helped me to get a better understanding of some of the working of the mill. While being present and operating the mill is a great teacher, there is a lot hidden inside the moving parts. This book helps connect what you see to what is actually there.
