John Muir’s book is considered one of the go-to resources for anyone interested in owning and maintaining a classic VW. Starting from explaining what to look for when buying an air-cooled VW this book assumes you are new to the club. Mr Muir is able to explain the concepts in a down to earth style easy enough for any skill level. There are cartoons and diagrams to go along with the writing so you can get a better idea what is being described. Jobs like checking the valve gaps, which might be intimidating to a novice, are thoroughly explained in a step by step style.
The book is organized in the order one might need information. Starting with the basics of the air-cooled VWs, leading to purchasing, tools and part, and fixing a flat. The book then starts to move into the regular maintenance as well as how to troubleshoot and fix more complex issues. Through it all great care is taken to explain at a beginner level.
For each task or repair the work is laid out as a checklist. This is something you can work right from the book, or transfer to your own paper to keep you on track and make sure you don’t miss a step.
To say I would recommend this for anyone who is interested in air-cooled VWs would be an understatement.
